KJ's Boots & Western Wear: After the Storm, have found second home in North Platte

North Platte, Ne - March 7 & 8 of 2024 will be one the Kuhlmann family will remember for a long time. The night of March 7 was the evening that the area received a record snow of over 15 inches, 14.6 inches of that came over a 6-hour period, some portions of the area received closer to 20 inches of snow. At the KJ's Boots & Western Wear store at the intersection of I-80 and the Hershey/Dickens road south of Hershey, all the snow that fell caused the businesses roof to fail. Connie Kuhlmann (owner) said her husband Kevin had gone to the story on the afternoon of March 8 to clear their parking lot and scoop the walk when he went into the store around 5pm and realized part of the roof had collapsed. 

A phone call went out from Kuhlmann at the time to friends and family to rush to the store and try to get the inventory out of the building before a larger problem developed. Within an hour of the call, a dozen people showed up to help with trailers, moving dollies and man-power. Later a Facebook post for help went out on the local Hershey page, and within 15 minutes much of the community of Hershey came to the aide of the Kuhlmanns. 

Nearly 3 months later, KJ's has reopened in North Platte in the old Sun-Mart building, now how to New Life Church, MEGA Gymnastics and CMH Interiors. Plans are still in the air for the old KJ's building in Hershey, but Connie Kuhlmann says "we hope to reopen in Hershey, but in the meantime North Platte has become our new home."

KJ's opened in North Platte on June 1, and is running a 20% off special through June 15th during the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, part of Nebraskaland Days.

North Platte, Neb. - The 2024 Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska Teen were announced on Saturday as Raechel Warren of Omaha was crowned Miss Nebraska 2024 and Janae Harris of Omaha was crowned Miss Teen Nebraska. 30 women competed the event which took place at North Platte High School. 

For Warren, this is her 10th year in the Miss America program and says this is a dream come true after winning the title on Saturday night. She also wants to use this opportunity to represent Nebraska and promote her platform, "Encouraging youth to discover their passion and purpose by championing mentorship, encouraging community and creating opportunity for self-discovery." 

Harris is preparing to start her senior year at Millard North where she is a member of the lacrosse team and is a participant in Millard North's STEM program, which allows students to take college courses. This was Harris' 3rd time ever competing in a pageant and it is a real honor to be crowned the 2024 Miss Nebraska Teen.

Miss Rodeo Nebraska Contest ready to start on Sunday; Former Miss Rodeo Nebraska says the 2024 contest could be one for the books

North Platte, Ne - The Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska competition begins Sunday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Nebraska is one of the only States that host their competition and pageant during a big rodeo event like the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at Nebraskaland Days according to 2010 Miss Rodeo Nebraska, Michelle Boeshart-Whitson. Whitson, who is the current MRN President says "we definetley set the bar, I think thats testimony to the amount of State Rodeo Queens that want to come to our pageant because they don't get a big stage from their own state."

She went on to say the the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant "tries to replicate the Miss Rodeo America Pageant that all these girls will compete at if they win during the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas."

Three ladies will compete for the Queen crown this week, along with another three in the Miss Teen Rodeo division.

Keith County Big Give hits first goal, continues through June 15

Ogallala, Ne - The 2024 Keith County Big Give is off to a great start. After one week they've achieved their first goal. The first goal was a $5,000 addition to a $75,000 match; the community needed to raise $175,000 by 5pm on Friday, June 6 for the $,5000 addition to be added. As of 10am that day, the number already stood north of $177,000. In our North Platte Kubota Podcast Derek Beck speaks with Caitlyn Fuller about the event and how you can donate to over 35 different Keith County non-profits.

 

Keith County Big Give is a collaborative community effort focused on building a better community, together.  

By focusing on common unity in our community, the residents, friends, and fans of Keith County can come together and build a better, stronger community with a robust and engaged giving base that ultimately helps the entire community thrive.  Keith County Big Give is an opportunity to support and celebrate Keith County nonprofit organizations through a single online giving platform that will accept donations between June 1 and June 15, 2024.  Donations may also be made by check or cash.

The fourth annual Keith County Big Give is presented by the Keith County Foundation Fund (KCFF) in partnership with Keith County nonprofit organizations.  For 2024, every donation has an extra impact because participating nonprofit organizations will also get a proportional share of the total match funds of at least $75,000!

The primary goals for the 2024 Keith County Big Give are to:

• Raise over $300,000 for participating organizations through donations, matching funds, and prizes
• Introduce new donors to local nonprofit organizations and engage at least 500 donors.
• Ensure the Keith County Big Give is self-sustaining by increasing involvement from the participating organizations.

North Platte, Neb. - A family fun event is taking place this Saturday with Agriculture on the Bricks taking place in the North Platte Downtown Canteen District. The event runs from 10:00am - 2:00pm with plenty of games and activities to do. It's free to attend the event. A dunk tank, food, crafts, prizes are just a few of the plenty of activities to do.

Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska ready for 2024 Pageant

North Platte, Ne - The first Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant was held in 1956, and since 1991 the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo at Nebraskaland Days in North Platte has been the backdrop for Nebraska's top rodeo royalty. Miss Rodeo Nebraska, JoSee Saults from Big Springs, Nebraska began her rein in January and will hold the title through the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in December. Maci Cox from North Platte is the current Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska. 

Both ladies will see there successors compete over the next week to be come the next Miss Rodeo & Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska. Coronation for both are next Wednesday in North Platte.

North Platte, Neb. - North Platte's newest food establishment and entertainment, Pizza Ranch officially opened on May 27th and has been serving plenty of hungry customers from North Platte and the surrounding communities. For Pizza Ranch, it has been a long five-year process before getting the chance to open the location at the end of May.

North Platte, Neb. - The8th Annual Bob Spady Memorial Golf Tournament is getting ready to tee off this Saturday at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte. It's $280 per team for the 4-man scramble.
