Post News Director Canon Rath caught up with Ashley Lewis from the Connection Homeless Shelter for their monthly conversation. This time, the two talked about the Out of Box Challenge the Connection Homeless Shelter is hosting.
NORTH PLATTE - The Connection Homeless Shelter is hosting a fundraiser event called the Out Of The Box Challenge. The shelter wants to invite local businesses, emergency personnel services, or just anyone who wants to form a team and take part in the challenge. The Connection Shelter would like to have business show off there boxes from November 13th-16th which is Hunger/Homeless Awareness Month. The final day of the event is November 16th at Brigham's Taproom where the teams can show off there box and have members vote who is the best. There is a registration fee of $200 per team.
The idea of the challenge is to grab a box and build a house out of it. The fundraiser event is to help raise money for the homeless shelter. There are dimension rules on the box which have to be 4x4x4. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above.

Post news director Canon Rath chatted with NPCC softball coach Janelle Higgins and Jada Florom about the Haunted Corn Maze that begins this weekend and runs through October.
NORTH PLATTE - The NPCC Softball team is excited to host the Haunted Corn Maze for the second straight year. Last year brought many screams as participants went through the maze. This is the 14th year of doing a fundraiser in October but 2nd year of the Haunted Maze.
The maze runs from 8:00pm -11:00pm on October 7th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th and of course on Halloween. The event cost $10 to get in the event. All proceeds go back to the softball program. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above.

Post News Director Canon Rath talked with Mid-Plains United Way Executive Director Haven Smith about the 28th Annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by First National Bank of Omaha.
NORTH PLATTE - The 28th Annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by First National Bank of Omaha fundraiser event is set for October 6th from 11:30am - 1:30pm in the downtown parking lot of FNBO in North Platte. The event is the official kick off for the 2023-2024 Mid-Plains United Way campaign season.
FNBO is hosting the event while all the proceeds made from this event will go to Mid-Plain United Way. "This is the 28th annual and it's presented by First National Bank of Omaha and Mid-Plains United Way is super grateful for them (FNBO) to be hosting this for us," said Executive Director Haven Smith. "They provide the event and all the proceeds come back to Mid-Plains United Way." The money raised will be used to help support non-profit organizations in the region.
15 teams have signed up for this year's cook-off and it only cost $10 to get into the event. You can try all the chilis and see which team may have the best. The event is October 6th at the downtown FNBO parking lot from 11:30am - 1:30pm. The weather is looking more on the chilly side for Friday. Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher as they recapped the October 3rd, North Platte City Council meeting.
NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte city council held their regular meeting on October 3rd and their were different discussion points on the agenda that was discussed amongst the council. A few discussion points including awarding the transportation staff for their help in the Sutherland Care Facility fire and Renee White for rookie of the year, water wells at the airport, action on ordinance 4137 (skill games), resolution for TIF at the new Murphy Tractor Site, and ordinance for sale of city industrial park lots.
A new water well is being built on property at the North Platte-Lee Bird Regional Airport to help improve water pressure and reliability on the east end of North Plate. "The water well will hook into the cities water system along Newberry Access on the east end of town," said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. "The water well will provide a little bit better water feed to the east end of town." With the new addition of the water well being built along Newberry Access, this will help serves the new industrial developments along Newberry Access.

Post's Derek Beck chatted with Autumn Schleicher from the Nebraska Department of Labor about how the last month of September is National Employee Older Workers Week and the Nebraska Department of Labor has programs for older workers to join their team.
NORTH PLATTE - The last week of September is dedicated as National Employee Older Workers Week and the week encourages employers to hire older workers to join their team. The Nebraska Department of Labor is always offering programs for workers 55 and older who want to get back into the work field. The Nebraska Department of Labor offers what's called the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The program is targeted at workers who are 55 and older, are unemployed and maybe looking to start a new career path. The program runs year-round but is limited spots.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Penny Craft about the Valve Cover Races coming up on October 28th.
NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Raceway is hosting their first ever Valve Cover Races on October 28th. The event geared towards a driver teaming up with 4-5 kids and competing in the races. The drivers will be the kid's mentors throughout the whole event from getting together to working on getting ready for the valve cover races and being a role model for their team.
Kids will receive a T-Shirt with their name and team name on it that they can wear to the day of the races. It is free for kids to participate in the event. Registration ends on October 1st. NORTH PLATTE - The September 19th North Platte City Council meeting has officially passed by. This week's city council meeting was a rather quick one as there was not a whole lot of agenda to discuss. The approval of fireworks for the North Platte Public Schools was granted, Ty Lucas also talks about user fees, another discussion was the housing problem in North Platte, and finally Lucas gave his perspective from the Union Pacific rail car that caught on fire last Thursday.

OGALLALA, NEB. - The Ogallala Regional Arts Council is getting ready to kick off their season of performances beginning with a concert coming up this Thursday, September 21st at 7:00 pm with Branden and James with Effie Passero. Branden and James are a cello and vocal due that travel around the United States and perform at concerts and events. Effie Passero is a singer who joins Branden and James at times when performing at events and concerts.
The event is taking place at the Ogallala Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the event cost $15 for adults and $7 for students. If you already purchased a membership, that would get you into the show. Memberships for the Ogallala Regional Arts Council will be sold at the show.
